Technical Guide: How Multi-DPI PDF Vector Rasterization Works

PDF documents define page geometry in resolution-independent PostScript user-space points (`1/72` of an inch). A standard US Letter page (`8.5 × 11` inches) measures `612 × 792` points. When converting a PDF page to a raster bitmap (`.png`), the sharpness of fine typography and vector diagrams depends entirely on the Dots Per Inch (DPI) scale factor applied during rasterization.

ViewAnyFile.app uses Mozilla’s `PDF.js` display-list interpreter coupled with high-precision HTML5 Canvas scaling right inside your browser:

  • 72 DPI (`1.0x` Scale — `612 × 792 px`): Matches native 1:1 PostScript point dimensions. Ideal for lightweight document thumbnails and quick web previews.
  • 150 DPI (`2.08x` Scale — `1275 × 1650 px`): Produces crisp, anti-aliased slides and charts suitable for embedding into PowerPoint decks, Notion docs, and social media carousels.
  • 300 DPI (`4.17x` Scale — `2550 × 3300 px`): Archival print-grade resolution that preserves 6-point legal footnotes, intricate architectural floorplans, and barcode edges without pixelation.
  • In-Memory ZIP Packaging: Multi-page PDFs are rasterized sequentially to prevent GPU memory spikes and packaged into a downloadable `.zip` archive locally using `JSZip`.

Need Smaller File Sizes After Rasterizing at 300 DPI?

Lossless 300 DPI PNG exports prioritize maximum sharpness. If you want to publish those exported PNGs on the web, drop them into our Image Compressor or convert them with our PNG to WebP Converter to cut byte size by up to 75%.
