Quick Answer: You can scan paper contracts, tax receipts, ID cards, and whiteboards into clean, flat PDF or JPG files using your phone or laptop camera—without installing mobile scanner apps, creating an account, or tolerating watermarks—at ViewAnyFile.app/tools/doc-scanner. All camera capture, 4-point perspective straightening, and contrast enhancement run 100% locally in your browser.

Why Mobile "CamScanner" Apps Are a Privacy & Subscription Trap

When you need to digitize a signed lease agreement, passport page, medical bill, or expense receipt on your smartphone, downloading a third-party "free scanner" app from the App Store or Google Play typically forces three compromises:

  • Mandatory Cloud Sync of Sensitive Documents: Many consumer scanner apps automatically upload every photographed page to proprietary cloud servers for OCR indexing and cross-device sync, exposing PII, signatures, and financial account numbers.
  • Watermarks & Weekly Subscription Paywalls: Free tiers routinely stamp ugly branding watermarks across the bottom corner of your PDF or demand $4.99–$9.99/week subscriptions just to export a clean file.
  • Zero Desktop Webcam Support: Mobile apps cannot help when you are already sitting at a laptop or desktop workstation and simply want to hold a receipt up to your webcam or straighten an angled photo you transferred from your phone.

The Mathematics of Document Scanning: 2D Projective Homography

When a camera photographs a rectangular sheet of paper at an oblique angle, parallel edges of the paper converge toward a vanishing point—a geometric distortion known as keystoning or perspective projection. Cropping a tilted trapezoid with a standard rectangular crop tool leaves angled margins and skewed lines of text.

Our Online Document Scanner applies a 2D Projective Homography Transformation directly inside an HTML5 <canvas> pixel buffer:

  1. 4-Corner Source Quadrilateral Selection: You position four interactive corner handles—Top-Left (x0, y0), Top-Right (x1, y1), Bottom-Right (x2, y2), and Bottom-Left (x3, y3)—along the physical corners of your paper document.
  2. Orthogonal Target Mapping: The engine calculates the Euclidean edge lengths of the quadrilateral in pixel space, determines the true width-to-height aspect ratio of the sheet, and solves the 3×3 projective matrix H that maps every destination pixel (u, v) in the flattened output rectangle back to its exact sub-pixel coordinate (x, y) in the raw camera frame.
  3. Bilinear Sub-Pixel Interpolation: Rather than rounding coordinates to the nearest integer pixel (which creates jagged text steps), our warp kernel blends the four surrounding source pixels weighted by fractional distance, producing razor-sharp typography.

Choosing the Right Image Enhancement Filter

Scanner Enhancement Mode Pixel Processing Algorithm Best Document Type
Original Color Perspective warp only; preserves exact camera RGB values. Color brochures, passports, ID cards, stamped certificates.
Enhanced Color White-balance normalization + S-curve contrast stretch. Contracts with blue ink signatures, highlighted textbook pages.
Grayscale ITU-R BT.601 luminance weighting (0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B). Pencil sketches, shaded forms, shaded tables.
B&W Document (High Contrast) Local adaptive luminance thresholding (removes desk shadows). Thermal receipts, printed legal contracts, invoices, fax-style PDFs.
